Two materials - eternal marble and modern polyethylene met in the same shot. For me, it is an image of the contemporary state of life. It may be is a story of the search of harmony and beauty in the modern world. This series of pictures I made during the restoration of the Nicolas's stairs. It shows pieces of Italian sculpture of the 19th century, wrapped in polyethylene for the time of conservation works.

Ustyugov Gennady Afanasyevich is «Russian Matisse». He is a genius of the after-war Leningrad underground. He is a man deeply mentally diseased, doomed for loneliness and household disorder, but at the same time having an unprecedented inner freedom.

Nativity 2001

On the 4th of November, 1989 my son was born. When I came to the maternity hospital where Phillip was born, I saw a really striking concrete fence. On that fence, for many years the newly-made fathers had been writing sincere and tender words addressed to the newly-made mothers. Per se, they created an endless, multi-layer pictorial canvas. That was a strange and beautiful story.

Landscape. Devotion to Smelov

St. Petersburg and its suburbs… This is a result of walks round the favourite places. Peterhof, Oranienbaum, Tsarskoe Selo, Pavlovsk, Gatchina are the precious necklace, created in the 18th century - a brilliant century in the Russian history. Looking at these pictures, I sometimes think that they only bear the traces of the times they were created, while the times of losses and catastrophes were erased by someone.

This series I shot during several years. One of my favorite pastimes is walking round the 'flea' market. I enjoy looking at old things which once had so various fates and finally, so strangely and unpredictably, met at one and the same tiny spot of space.
